You have numbers. Lots of numbers: course grades, attendance, assignment scores, test scores, and more. You have lots of descriptions, too: ELL and SpEd status, ethnicity, gender, and more. How in the world will you use these data to learn anything?
With clear data, you can make decisions about where to target interventions, focus your instructional efforts, and even adjust your teaching strategies.
Excel Part 1: Basic Data Analysis
We’ll use basic Excel functions and formulas to pull useful information out of the data. You’ll learn to calculate various analyses, such as averages, histograms, and standard deviations. You will also learn to differentiate the data by various subgroups or specific student data. We’ll begin with defining questions: what do you want to know, what data do you have available, and which data do you need to find your answer. Then we’ll learn the techniques to get the answers to your data questions.
Excel Part 2: Extended Data Analysis and Strategies for Efficiency
We’ll extend the topics in Part 1 to look at variables, “what if” situations, and changing data sets. We will conduct a variety of higher-level tests, such as correlations and Anova, that provide powerful tools for testing assumptions. We will also practice strategies for aggregating data, creating “data dashboards,” and making analysis much more efficient.
Excel Part 3: Automating Excel with VBA Macro Coding
Don’t do the same things over and over. Create macros to do all the work for you. We will use Excel’s macro generator as well as write our own basic macros to make Excel do what we want, not only to pull information from data but also to get data into Excel. We’ll even look at creating custom user interfaces and tools for data entry. (This is where Excel transitions from a data tool to an customizable efficiency data management tool.)

David Bowman, MA, MBA, has been involved with instructional leadership, teaching and learning systems, program design, and teacher professional development for more than 20 years, plus 8 more years as a classroom teacher.
David Bowman is a long-time power user for Excel. He has used Excel for analysis of many types of data sets and for developing essential data management tools.
This workshop will be conducted virtually with Zoom.
