Part of the Professional Teacher professional development series.

Photoshop is a powerful application for modifying and creating images. If you are going to unleash the power of Photoshop, for both simple and complex images, you have to know how to create selections and use masks. Creating selections and using masks are two fundamental skills for nearly everything you’ll do with Photoshop.

We’ll look at various ways to create and refine selections, as well as techniques for creating and modifying masks. While we do this, we’ll explore and use a variety of modification layers.

For example, let’s say you want to brighten someone’s face in a photograph. Simple, right? You will use selection tools, modification layers, and masks to ensure only the face is brightened.

IMPORTANT: To participate in this workshop, you will need to have access to Photoshop 2019 or higher during the workshop. (Every public school teacher and student in New Mexico can have free access to Adobe Photoshop. See

For those who are interested, we can stay on for up to an hour after the session to discuss specific techniques that interest you, such as cropping, whitening teeth, fixing image blemishes, re-coloring images, making text graphics, and sharpening images.
