This 1-day session comprises two parts.
The Oral Language Connection to Early Literacy: This session includes the structures of oral language that provide the foundation for literacy, the developmental sequences of how young children learn these structures, and strategies that enhance oral language skills, such as language-stimulation techniques, questioning strategies and dialogic reading. This presentation will stress the importance of vocabulary development at the early childhood level.
Phonological Awareness Connections to Early Literacy: This presentation will include the component skills of phonological awareness, the linguistic hierarchy of phonological skills, a general continuum of skill development, and the expected ages at which these skills should be emerging. Additionally, strategies and activities that help to facilitate a range of phonological awareness skills will be shared.
